This DIY homemade printed Christmas gift wrap activity for kids of all ages, using recycled brown paper, really got us into the festive spirit, and in a small way, we can feel we are making a difference.

This year, as a family of four, we are keen to keep unrecyclable store bought Christmas wrapping paper waste to a minimum, so we had great fun with friends getting messy and being creative, whilst educating our 12 and 10 year olds that Christmas needs to be more homemade, like in the 'olden days' as they call them!

We purchased a 100m roll of recycled brown paper, for £15.00 ( around $20).
Along with some inexpensive poster and acrylic paints, we gathered up our festive stampers and some wine corks and old toy building blocks to print with.
We also used polystyrene pizza bases to make print blocks, by scratching into them with a sharp pencil.

Our 10 and 12 year olds painted and printed for over two hours with their friends and were really experimental - so were the adults. No phones were on, we just listened to music, chatted and had a great time!

Here are some of our finished one metre long wrapping paper artworks!
Some of them remind me of Klimt - it must be the gold and silver metallic paint.

I'd love to hear back from you if you give it a go!

Henri Matisse’s eye popping colour cut-outs are brought together for a blockbuster show at Tate Modern, The Sunday Times

Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs
Tate Modern: Exhibition, 17 April – 7 September 2014

Even if you can't make it to London to see this exhibition with your kids, you can get them inspired by Matisse Cut Outs and make your own fantastic collages and paintings.

You can download this template of Matisse inspired cut out shapes here

Cut out the shapes using brightly coloured papers or magazine cuttings.
Play around with the shapes, glue them down when you are happy with the arrangement.

You can even have a go at doing a  painting of your collage - your own Modern Art original!

Great for all ages, younger children may need help with the cutting out.

Packs of heart shaped doilies are available from Ebay and Amazon very cheaply.
We made this print by placing a doily on white paper and brushing red acrylic paint all over the holes and around the edge - lift the doily off carefully to reveal a beautiful heart print! Suitable for age 3 plus with a little help!
