SIMPLE HEART COLLAGE
Cut some squares of patterned paper, from an old magazine,
around 5cm x 5cm. Fold them in half an cut a simple heart shape from each.
Rearrange the hearts and glue them in an 'offset' way into a non matching square to create a simple yet interesting
paper mosaic or collage.
Great for card making!

SIMPLE PRINTING
I bought a pack of heart shaped doilies very inexpensively from Amazon.
I intended to make bunting from them, but ended up using them as stencils for paint!
Simple and effective for children of all ages

Make a Valentine's Day Card
I think home made cards are so much more personal than shop bought ones. The recipient knows that you have taken time especially for them.

Pipe Cleaner Specs
This activity created lots of amusement in our house, all you need are pipecleaners and scissors.
Make 2 hearts, use a small piece of pipe cleaner for the nose bit and 2 more to curl around the ears.
We went on talk about Elton John, and the Buggles - pop stars from the past who wore big glasses!

Print block made from polystyrene / pizza base

SCANDINAVIAN STYLE HEART PRINTS
Cut shapes and scratch into polystyrene. You can buy polystyrene sheets, or pizza bases work equally as well.
Paint the block, preferably with acrylic paint (apron needed, as it will permanently stain clothing).
Turn over, press down onto paper - ta-dah! Once you have made the block, you can wash it and re use it as many times as you want. Great for art prints, cards, bunting etc

WOVEN HEART BUNTING AND DECORATIONS
I found this activity a while back on the Activity Village website,
where a great template and instructions are available.
I developed the idea further into bunting and door hangers.
You can see more images on my blog.
I enjoyed doing this activity with young people in their hospital beds, and a group of 5 -11 year olds in a wood - so it's a versatile project!
The first heart is a bit tricky, and then you'll be flying.
I'd say under 7's need assistance with the weaving element.

JAM TARTS!
Get baking! Simple and delicious.
Kids love using all the pastry off-cuts to make the little heart shapes to go on top - mini cutters available online, Amazon, Ebay
etc

WAX CRAYON AND WATERCOLOURS - WAX RESIST
A simple, fun activity with a great outcome.
Use a white wax crayon or white oil pastel.
Draw heart shapes (or anything) on white paper.
Wash over with watery watercolours. The crayon / pastel will
naturally resist the colour to create this batik-look effect.
great for Valentine's day cards, wall art, etc

PAINT CHIPS & A HEART SHAPED HOLE PUNCH
A fun activity exploring shape, collage and colour.
Collect some paint swatch cards and get punching!
Great for wall art and funky Valentine's day cards.

This seems to be a popular pastime, here's a link to loads more
paint chip projects!

SALT DOUGH HEARTS
These hearts, circles and button salt dough mobiles, painted with acrylic, were made about 3 years ago.
Amazing how long it lasts, it seems more durable than clay. The circle imprint was made by pressing a biro into the dough.
Great salt dough recipe.

GIANT TISSUE PAPER HEART
This is about 3 years old now!
Bend some wire into a heart shape. Tear strips of tissue paper and
build up layers with diluted PVA. A lovely decoration for a child's room,
all year round.

Picture

WIRE, BEADS AND TISSUE PAPER

Make a collection of small wire heart shapes.
Thread buttons onto them, cover some in tissue paper. add a handful of glitter! Ta-dah!

BUTTON MOSAIC ON CANVAS
Paint a red heart shape on the canvas and then get glueing!
Use strong PVA glue.
This artwork measures about 15 x 15cm.
The repetitive action is very relaxing - a bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle!
